PLEASE PRAY FOR THE UK!!

It is hard not to feel downcast and discouraged this morning as we continue to hear in the news about the absolute mayhem and chaos assailing the UK in these last few days.  The powers of hell are alive and kicking and intensifying by the minute, which if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you will understand as meaning that Christ’s return is all the nearer.

Are we ready for His return? Are we ready for the onslaught that will be caused as a result of the tension between light and darkness tightening?  Is the Christian population on its knees seeking God or are we still short-sighted and blinded by our own man-made enterprises with no biblical foundation? My stomach churns this morning as I hear of the madness and darkness engulfing the streets of the UK today.  I am reminded of the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake and  hurricane Katrina which left thousands of people homeless and with nothing left to call their own.  No such event is taking place here, no such tragedy has hit our shores, and so one has to ask what is causing this pure evil in our streets if not a lack of discernment between good and evil, a lack of spiritual direction, of firm morals, and understanding of God’s sovereignty above all He created.  The whole world seems to be spiralling out of control, and for once, man is beginning to admit and see that no intelligence, no scheme, no tactic will be able to get things back on track.  We are finally beginning to see it is only by God’s grace that the world has come this far, or are we?

I don’t mean to be pessimistic or negative, but when will we acknowledge that apart from the Lord we can do nothing, we are nothing?  The world and its leaders have been given ample opportunity for many generations to love God and to follow Christ, but we continue trying to do in our own strength what only God can do.  The Church itself meant to be shining as a light, a city on a hill in this hour, it’s shining, but shining for its absence as it remains self-focused and self-serving.  Where can the lost turn, where can those paralysed by fear turn, where can those looking for hope and a future turn when all many churches care about is inflating their membership lists and the egos of those at the helm who only care about being seen to have recognition and credibility in this world?

We need to get on our knees now and seek God with all we have, not on a Sunday morning or during our weekly prayer meetings, but right now in our homes alone or with others.  It is only in that quiet place, alone with God, in humility, that we will be able to discern what God is saying to his people in this hour.  It is only there that we will be equipped through the Holy Spirit with everything we need to face the darkness that is ahead, and able to encourage others in this most challenging hour.

Our nation and many others have had it so easy for so long. Oh Lord, how could we be so greedy and so blind?  In our selflessness and security, in our complacency, we have simply forgotten that it is only by the grace of God that we made it this far, that we enjoy the wealth and the freedom we enjoy today; it is only by the grace of God that our prosperous nations are not on the news everyday at the hands of a famine which is exterminating and depleting at unstoppable speed.  It is by the grace of God alone that we have food on the table, a roof over our heads, and clothes on our back.  It is by the grace of God even and foremost that we have faith in the ONE who blessed us and yet allowed others in His omniscience to suffer hunger, disease, exploitation, abuse and slavery.  What will it take for man to acknowledge the supremacy of God, the Holiness of Jesus Christ?

God said in Hosea 13: 6-8:

When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud; then they forgot me.  So I will come upon them like a lion, like a leopard I will lurk by the path.  Like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will attack them and rip them open.  Like a lion I will devour them; a wild animal will tear them apart.”

Please pray for the UK as we navigate these turbulent waters.  I was going to ask that we pray for the world’s economy but I know that what is happening today is all part of God’s plan and also it feels obscene for me to ask God to protect those nations which today are in danger of collapse as their economies come under threat, when there are already so many other countries in the world which for years have been at the mercy of others’ compassion and charity and so little has been done to help them, when we could have done so much more.  It is at this hour that things will be revealed for what they were and are.  The Christian books, ministries, conferences, training, etc investing millions of pounds and dollars to puff us up with knowledge when all along all that was asked of us was to love God and our neighbour.  God have mercy on our souls, for we have failed to do the one thing which we had been asked to do.  Our prosperity, our knowledge and our faith were freely given as a gift and a blessing to in turn touch the lives of others who don’t know Christ, and all we have done with such gifts has been to puff ourselves up with more things, knowledge and power which we did not need, as Christ himself is our rock, our foundation, our strength and our only hope.  There is nothing left to do, noting left to say.  This is a time to be still and simply repent with fear and trembling, to seek God, to humble ourselves and to seek forgiveness for so miserably failing to act on his simple command to love God and to love others as ourselves.

  1. It was just this morning that I was reading Numbers chapter 14. In this chapter, the people of Israel listened to the reports of spys that looked at the promised land with eyes of flesh and not of the Spirit. The people complained and murmured against God. They refused to enter the promised land in faith and as a result were turned back for another 40 years.

At the beginning of 2011 God told me it was time to quit wandering around the same mountain. It was time to cross the Jordan and enter the land flowing with milk and honey. It may seem like there are giants in the UK and elsewhere, but God has a greater plan. We must enter in faith, and not empower the Amalekites and the Canaanites with our words.

We serve a God that is greater than the prince of this world. The enemy can rultle his sabre and shoot firery darts, but he has no real authority.

We must pray but we must speak into the air in order to bring down the strongholds the enemy has built because our our own familiarity with his lies.

I, for one, am praying for the return of sanity to the UK as well as the US and other countries.

There are greater things just over the river. Speak, and God will part the waters so we can enter in.

    Blessings

    • Dear Dave,

Thank you very much for your comment.

I truly hope that with my words I am not empowering the Amalekites and the Canaanites, but rather speaking to brothers and sisters in Christ, particularly those whose influence is greater than they realise, to snap out of their stupor and to begin to act on THE TRUTH that you eloquently express in your comment: God is greater than the prince of this world and He alone has all authority on earth and in Heaven, so why as His Body are we not representing such power to bring light into darkness, such strength to lift up the souls of the downcast, and to bring hope to the weary? Why do we continue to engage in enterprises which God has not commissioned us to pursue?

I believe that as you say we have become familiar and comfortable with the lies of the enemy, but much more so to our peril is the fact that we have become too familiar with God. We claim to know and understand Him, but our actions contradict the testimony we Christians give to the world today. We have lost the fear of the Lord and this is rendering churches ineffective for kingdom work. A true appreciation of who God really is can only begin in our prayer closets when no one is looking, and only in that place of repentance and humility will our hearts be ready to receive the power from on high to destroy the strongholds of the enemy you speak of. We continue to believe that the church and its leaders can supply us with this power, and in doing so we give glory to man and not God. God alone is our source and He alone is our salvation.

  2. Charles Finney stated in 1857 during the Businessman’s Prayer Revival and just before the beginning of the Civil War, “We’ve had our fill of preaching. Now it’s time to pray.”

It looks like it’s that time again.

  3. Mercedes, I recognize your call to all brothers and sisters in Christ to be shaken from their zombie state and once again regain the power of prayer. I do not think you words are intended to, or will, empower the enemy. On the contrary, I believe the words you speak to be words of power and authority.
The words I speak of are the hand wringing; woe is me, words of a milk toast people who have forgotten whom they serve. Like you say, the church has, long ago, put their faith in men and not in God, just as the people of Israel put their faith in the lies of the spies and their words of disobedience.
The call today, your call, is to the Church not the church. The Bride of Christ, not the bride’s maid.
Keep up the good work. There truly is a “land flowing with milk and honey” just over the river.

  4. Dear Mercedes,
I cant imagine what its been like, being surrounded by rioters for several days – scary to say the least. My prayers go out to you and yours. Earlier this year, I and my Christian friends here in Brisbane were surrounded by flood waters for about 1 week and that was a bit scary in itself. Hundreds of people lost their homes and thousands lost jobs – whole towns and their rail and roadway infrastructure went too – some never to be regained.

More recently, Christian folks in Japan and New Zealand lost loved ones and homes/jobs too in severe and unexpected earthquakes. I’m not emailing in to preach a sermon, but to give one word, if you like: “whatever can be shaken, will be shaken” thus says the Lord. This includes countries, ‘churches’ and institutions of every kind.

It gets pretty personal when you see shops and houses (empty slab foundations) or where they used to be, and you realise that some of those pictures on TV that night, aren’t that far from where you live.

God is shaking up this old world and warning those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, that the time of His coming is near, and that the hour is later than we think. It is time for us to get our spiritual house in order, and learn to trust the Chief Shepherd as we never have before.

God’s richest blessings at this very trying time

  5. Dear Austin,

Thank you so much for leaving a comment. It is always a joy to receive a comment from a new visitor to my site.

Here in the UK we heard about the floods in Brisbane as well as the earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan. I did in fact write a post at the time confirming very much what you are saying and which you can read here: https://anewcreation33.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/the-shaking-of-christchurch/

Luckily the riots did not affect my family personally as we live miles away from where it all hapenned, but we were absolutely shocked nonetheless by the senselessness of it all, the evil in it all, and the potential to destroy the freedom and the blessings that this nation enjoys today. I am not even British bu tam married to a Brit and have been living here for many years and I love this nation and its people. I find it deeply upsetting to see how quickly the tide can turn and how quickly what we take for granted in our daily life can be snatched from our hands just like that. But as you say God is far greater and more powerful than any of it and in his wisdowm He is allowing a set of circumstances, a chain of events to unfold which will draw His people to himself like never before and that has to be something celebrated in an age when The Church has become just another corporation with its own structures, hierarchy and policies. Christ has to once more be at the center, the core and the foundation of Christianity, and at the center, the core and the foundation of our world, and so like you say we are going to have to trust God to bring this about.

    Keep in touch

God bless you and your family too!

  6. On Thursday, here in the US, I see a news crawler on the bottom of my TV screen that Everton postponed their game due to rioting. I haven’t a clue where Everton is, but I wondered why is there rioting going on. I eventually here this morning that there was no political or social cause, but just, as the commentator put it, “debauchery and drunkenness as happens all over the country at 2 am.” I have no idea how accurate that newsman is, but I’ve seen enough where I am to say that this is probably not anything different as Sodom and Gomorrah, only different place. It isn’t a matter of freedom, but one of the spiritual war those involved have no clue about. We, as believers can only pray, and speak God’s words when the time and place opens up. Even in praying, it is a situation where my human words are insufficient, may the Spirit’s groanings be better than my words.

  7. Here is the balance we have been waiting for in the media coverage of these riots in the UK

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peteroborne/100100708/the-moral-decay-of-our-society-is-as-bad-at-the-top-as-the-bottom/

    Excerpt –

The culture of greed and impunity we are witnessing on our TV screens stretches right up into corporate boardrooms and the Cabinet. It embraces the police and large parts of our media. It is not just its damaged youth, but Britain itself that needs a moral reformation.

Perhaps, but what Britain really needs is a living testimony of Jesus Christ, an active and burning lamp (stand). The truth is that it has probably been removed, and only the life and spirit of Jesus Christ can restrain evil and lawlessness.

Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Rev 2:5)

Once a lampstand has been officially removed, the Lord turns His love and attention to His remnant (the few) who are left in these dark places, for very quickly afterwards their lives begin to get very difficult. Please pray for those in the UK who love the Lord, who are willing to follow the Lamb wherever He goes, who love not this world and its idols, who are not caught up in all of the religious fornication and adultery taking place, who are mourning the condition of the professing church (that has largely forsaken the central place of the cross (suffering) in their teaching and their lives) in their country.

And lest we become smug or complacent in the US, these very same events may soon find their way to our shores –

    http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/10-signs-that-economic-riots-and-civil-unrest-inside-the-united-states-are-now-more-likely-than-ever

At every level it would seem, in every sphere, in almost every location and region, there is an escalating convergence of dreadful trends and events that can lead only to one place. And we know that out of these ashes will surface a false savior, a shiny pretender, representing the fullest personification of the life of this world, the flesh, the embodying perpetuation of the lie that man shall surely not die!

Do we see this? Do we hear what He is saying to us? Are we starting to become nervous, afraid, unsettled? Are we gripping our money and our things just a little tighter lately? Are we only viewing such events as the world sees them, in merely economic or political or cultural terms? Do we not realize that when the Church of Jesus Christ withers (becomes nominal, lukewarm, useless) in a nation, that nation’s course can only lead to darkness and desolation? It is only a matter of time before it is over.

We are seeing things we would never imagine just a few years ago my brothers. Oh how the mighty are falling! There are no exceptions among great or small nations! What has taken generations to build up and fortify, can be brought to nothing almost instantly in the Lord’s sore displeasure.

One thing we must be clear on and that is that the Lord will take care of His own. He alone is our security and our provision. He is our wisdom in these uncertain times. Judgement is coming, but we must stand our ground as Jeremiah did. We must stand on the Lord and His Word! We must rest in Him and His sure foundation. This tower of Babel is falling, and once again the God of Creation will divide the peoples. War is coming! Ancient animosities are surfacing! Restraint is being lifted in areas of human unity in defiance of the Living God!

My brothers/sisters – we must love one another in this common faith and life, we must share all that we are and have with one another! We must be His disciples in more than just word or promise, but in living reality. Ask the Lord where and how and when to invest yourself on other saints who are in need or affliction. Pray yes but then as the Holy Spirit compels and directs, we must get off our knees and reach into our hearts and lives to bring the love of our God to bear. The Lord very clearly conveyed to me that we cannot be ready without actively helping others to be ready also.

Oh Lord Help us! Save Us Lord! Lead Us! Teach us Lord!

    • Hi W.E. Smith,

Many thanks for your comment and for publishing this post on your site. I agree with everything the journalist writes in the Daily Telegraph about the riots that have taken place in the UK, and how easy it is to forget that it is not only the poorer in society who display today a behaviour which confirms how our moral standards and our faith in a Supreme God are faltering. It is all too easy to blame all guilt on those who cannot defend themselves against a corrupt system which supports the survival of the strongest and most affluent. But God sees it all and He will bring justice where it is needed perhaps not in our time but most certainly in His Perfect Timing.

My concern is not only with the double standards of the upper classes and the lack of role models for the poorer classes. My concern is for the double standards and hypocrisy that has also infected The Church which represents Christ in this world, the very place where people would hope to find genuine people with genuine motives and a genuine heart. Again, God sees it all and will deal with it all in due time in His perfect will, justice and mercy.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your wisdom and experience.

      God bless you

      Mercedes

  8. Mercedes,
sorry I haven’t been in touch but I’ve suffered a bit due to some winter time ills, and in between that, I’ve been doing a bit of blogging myself. You can read the blogs at http://brisbanechurch.com.au/blog. This particular blogsite isn’t that well known, and of course, my passing this on to you isn’t about self promotion etc. I don’t have any books, DVDs or things to sell. I just want to encourage as many of my brethren as I can in these last days.
I intend on keeing in touch and my email is portbuscen@yahoo.com.au
